As an unpaved surface emits dust, the surface deteriorates over time, producing loose stones and gravel creating potholes, wash boarding and rutting. Loose aggregate and excessive dust can damage equipment, vehicles, windshields, headlights, suspension and brake systems, chip paint, impair driver visibility, vehicle driving stability, and dust inhalation worsens asthma and other respiratory problems.

Acrylic Polymers
Acrylic polymer-based palliatives such as Liquid Rubber Road Restore are stable in soils after curing and present no hazardous constituents to aquatic organisms, terrestrial animals or vegetation and cannot be transported in runoff water. Industry tests have confirmed that high CBR strength/ load bearing strength and reduced permeability/ hydraulic conductivity for long term stabilization is achieved. Extremely effective in stabilizing soil particles, fugitive dust control and creates durable, long lasting roads and laneways.
Magnesium Chloride
The application of deliquescent salts to road surfaces can control road dust but offer low levels of road stabilization. A deliquescent salt, like calcium or magnesium chloride, absorbs water from the air. Soils treated with these salts have a higher water content than untreated soils. Slippery wet roads and vehicle corrosion are disadvantages of salt application. Treated unpaved roads are short term and must be periodically maintained with additional applications. Rainfall eventually removes salts from the roadway becoming harmful to groundwater and vegetation. Calcium ions may remain in soil by binding to other particles or ions, but chloride ions eventually drain into surface water. The use of these salts, are highly discouraged within twenty (20) yards / 18 meters of open bodies of water, including lakes, streams, canals, flood control channels and drinking water well-heads.
Asphalt Emulsion
Asphalt emulsions are often heated to allow for smooth application. The heated emulsion releases vapors, which contain polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH’s) and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) Petroleum-based Binders include emulsified asphalts, cutback asphalt, and Bunker C. These agents coat particles with a thin layer of asphalt increasing particle mass and decreasing the chance of becoming airborne. Emulsified asphalt is a mix of asphalt and water which penetrates road surface dirt. This works well when the asphalt is mixed into the top inch or two of road surface with a grader. These products can contaminate waterways due to runoff and are not often used anymore on non-traffic roads and laneways.
Lignin-Based Palliatives
Lignin-based palliatives are not recommended for non-traffic stabilization. Surface binding action of lignin-based treatments may be reduced or completely destroyed when heavy rains occur. The use of these palliatives are also highly discouraged within twenty (20) yards / 18 meters of open bodies of water, including lakes, streams, canals, flood control channels and drinking water well-heads.
